Nike continues to grow more and more creative with their ad campaign's. A few months back we featured the "Boom Campaign Commercial" starring Rick Ross which was pretty fresh. However, it pails in comparison to the Robert Rodriguez directed "The Black Mamba" featuring Kobe Bryant. The first trailer from this campaign features the 70's style cinematic visuals Rodriguez has popularized with numerous films, the latest being "Machete" (a few actors from the film actually appear in this clip). Check out Kobe (rockin' his custom Nike Destroyer jacket) in his latest endeavor with longtime collaborator Nike Sportswear.

Nike Air Max 90 Pecan/Black

The Air Max 90 is by far one of Nike's best shoes in my opinion. This classic design is synonymous amongst sneakerheads everywhere. That being said, when new colorways drop they aren't around very long. I suspect the same from the latest drop which features pecan leather, black trim, and strong royal blue accents. A must have for Air Max 90 lovers out there.

Raekwon gave us the best Wu album in years when he dropped OB4CL2 last year. He is slatted to release Shaolin vs. Wu Tang later this year which promises to be dope as well. In this edition of Sample Sessions we'll take it back to Rae's debut album OB4CL.

I think we all recognize the vocal samples in the intro from Scarface. The musical sample comes from a Harlem-based R&B group called Black Ivory. The song is called "I Keep Asking You Questions". Check it out.

We are big music junkies at Kirin so enjoying music isn't enough, we want to unearth its origin. So we will use this forum to bring you some of our favorite songs and the record it sampled. Got it? Good.

First up is a new joint by Kanye West/Jay-Z & La Roux entitled 'That's My Bitch". This song boast a dope drum pattern featured in an oldie by Afro-Rock band Assagai called "Telephone Girl". Producer Q-Tip masterfully manipulated this sample to create something fresh for two of hip hops best. Check it out.

I had a very strong feeling that the Nike Air Royal would become a very popular shoe. I didn't however imagine it would be so highly sought after in such a short period of time. A few months ago we showed you the Nike/Harris Tweed Air Royal now we have something just as fresh for you to preview.

The new Air Royal colorway keeps it basic yet sleek with rich black leather, vibrant blue accents on the laces, heel, and tongue. Also noticeable are the silver outdoor eyelets. Just a week ago we saw the much hyped release of the Air Jordan XI "Cool Greys". Now the Jordan Brand is at it again with another stellar release. The Air Jordan 3 is quite possibly one of my favorite shoes. Its symbolic of everything I love about shoes and basketball all rolled into one. They remind me of my youth and the golden era of basketball. Like 1988 when MJ was rockin these all the way to a win at the Slam Dunk Contest. Classic!

Even if you aren't a Jordan fan I think this is a must have shoe for your collection. They will be available at select retailers on 1/22/11 for $150. Are you going to cop a pair?

What To Read: In Between - Guy Bourdin

Guy Bourdin was far ahead of his time as a fashion photographer. His vivid, imaginative, and intelligent outlook on fashion photography are just a few reasons why he is championed as the best (arguably of course). The latest work from his vault "In Between" was published by Steidldangin and edited by Shelly Verthime earlier this year.

I recently ordered this book online and eagerly await its arrival. It will surely be filled with incredible imagery and Bourdin's signature wit. So if you enjoy fashion photography and love the work of the greats, this is a must have.

Nike Zoom Kobe VI Grinch Edition

New Balance H710 Ivy League Collection

We all know and love the timeless look of the New Balance shoe. So, its only right that they take it back with their new Ivy League Collection. The line is inspired by early 1960's fashion at prep schools such as Princeton, Yale, Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Columbia, Havard, and Penn.

Each H710 shoe represents a school through its corresponding colorway and tongue tag. A few of the kicks in this collection feature the "hiker book look" that seems to be taking over right now. Cam Newton Wins 2010 Heisman Trophy

In one of the most controversial votes in the history of the Heisman Trophy Award, Auburn Tiger Cam Newton takes it in a landslide. Its been obvious for quite some time that Newton was indeed the best player in college football. However, the scandal surrounding Newton and his father was the only thing potentially standing between Cam joining the ultimate college football fraternity.

Fellow Heisman candidates - Andrew Luck Stanford, LaMichael James Oregon, and Kellen Moore Boise State, all had incredible seasons. All four players teams held a combined record this year of 47-2. Newton and James will see each other again on Janurary 10th, 2011 for the Tostitos BCS National Championship Game. Should be a good one. Congrats to Cam Newton!

TikTok and LunaTik Multi-Touch Watches

By now you've probably seen the new iPod Nano. The Nano has an interesting history of design, and while i personally have not had much need or desire for the previous iterations, I expected the same out of the new (6th Gen) model. I simply had no need for one before, but with the advent of a multi-touch screen, a pedometer and Nike + sport kit and the rash of Nano Watch cases; I've seriously put it on my "must have" list. You guys know the tech geek /futurist I am and having a touch screen watch that has a million and one (possible) functions has been on my wish list since i can remember. There have been many attempts at cashing in on this Nano- watch idea but Scott Wilson with MINIMAL design studio has made perhaps the cleanest, most well designed case yet. And to test how desirable his vision is he submitted an application to KickStarter.com. A MicroLending/Funding site for creative projects. Wilson's concept has quickly sky rocketed to become the largest funded project on Kickstarter yet, currently at $600k and counting. Asking for a mere $15k to start his project, over 9,500 people have bought into Wilson's idea as well as secured themselves a watch (band) or two when the project launches. Everything about this inspires the hell out of me. The design is clean, the idea is so simple it makes you want to kick yourself for not thinking of it, and the idea behind KickStarter is GREAT.Now we wait for the execution and the 2nd line...

Stussy X Nike All Court Mid Supreme

Levi's Vintage Store Tokyo

Weakend Jam: H.I.S.D. - Lando

(Hueston Independent Spit District) recently released their sophomore album entitled the "The Weakend". It has already received great reviews which were fueled by the lead single "Lando". Video: Dom Kennedy - Locals Only

I got a chance to see Dom Kennedy at SXSW this year and was thoroughly impressed. He reminds me of Slim Thug but a more polished west coast version. It's good to see such a promising artist that can bridge the gap between hardcore west coast rap and relevant hip hop.

The video for "Locals Only" is the second clip from the album "From The Westside, With Love". Both the song and video are dope. The intro to the video kicks off with some good ole Les Nubians playing in a beautiful train station which immediately pulled me in. The Weekend Jam is a little late this week but well worth it if you ask me. One of the best producers of all time (in my humble opinion) Pete Rock is back on the scene and I couldn't be more excited. Recently signing with Kanye's G.O.O.D. Music Label, the Chocolate Boy Wonder has been on a tear lately making some incredible beats for the likes of Raekwon, Red Cafe, Talib Kweli, Jay-Z, and of course Kanye.

Unlimited Urban Woods

Imagine walking downtown in your city and seeing a giant box. Now imagine walking into that box and finding yourself in a huge never-ending forest with the sun shining on your face and leaves falling everywhere. Sounds like something from The Chronicles of Narnia but that's what you'll feel when (if) you walk into the "Unlimited Urban Woods" Project by DUS Architects in Oosterdokskade, Amsterdam. It was comissioned to be a "love provoking art piece" for their "Liefde in de Stad" (Love In the City) Festival and makes use of specific mirror placement to make a single tree look like an infinite forest. Here's to hoping they take the installation on tour..

At Kirin we're brand conscious, but we're not label whores. If a product is made with a high quality, does what it should, and looks good doing it then we'll check it out.
With that said, Microsoft's newest, and some say last chance at the mobile phone market has definitely earned our seal of approval.
Windows Phone 7 ( or WP7) was originally supposed to be released with the Launch of the Windows 7 Desktop OS two years ago but due to delays in programing got pushed back. If you have had a Windows Mobile phone in the past you wont recognize these at ALL. WP7 is an entirely new build for Windows Mobile devices which means they started from scratch.
They combined the Zune HD with all of the Window's desktop essentials including a complete Microsoft Office mobile Suite and came out with a pretty solid system. WP7 will have all the usual smartphone features such as access to a mobile marketplace (and all you can eat style Zune Pass!),navigation via Bing maps or google, on screen keyboards, etc. I think the most stand out feature will be the access to Xbox Live. Which will allow users to connect with friends, compare achievements, and play mobile versions of your favorite games. This will probably be the closest we come to a hand held Xbox and with the multitude of device manufacturers making both touch screen only-and keyboard WP7 phones, the future of xbox gaming looks bright. Its already launched in Europe and set to launch in November on US shores. So get to your carrier's site and see what phones they have coming your way. It may not be "magical" but it will be capable of some pretty cool tricks regardless.

The Karaka House is inspired by a collection of interlocking concrete box forms. The three level home features a timberline spiral staircase, textured smooth concrete walls, while skylights and glass give the home limitless natural lighting not to mention immaculate views. A cool shoe is a cool shoe no matter how its constructed. That being said, I never thought I would see a cool shoe made partly with tweed. Nike has proven me wrong by collaborating with Scottish fabric manufacturer Harris Tweed to do just that. The Air Royal is extremely hot in my opinion. Maybe that's why this movement by the Street Etiquette gents resonates so deeply with me, that and the fact its dope as hell! Joshua Kissi and Travis Gumbs are Street Etiquette, a style blog and fashion guide that's making waves throughout the industry.

Their latest project "The Black Ivy" gives us an inside look at the style, culture, and tradition of the first black college students. Paying homage to such a special time in African American history with dignity and intelligence makes me proud. As the saying goes... Young, Gifted, & Black.

Album Review: Bilal - Airtight's Revenge

Its an amazing thing to watch an artist grow before your very eyes. The truly talented ones get better as they go and that can definitely be said for neo-soul crooner Bilal. Since his debut album "1st Born Second" in 2001, Bilal has been somewhat of a staple in the music industry when it comes to album features and background vocals. Singing for the likes of Jay-Z, Common, Kanye West, and one of my hometown favorites Solange, Bilal's sophomore album has been eagerly anticipated by fans and artist alike. Nearly ten years removed from his debut album Bilal gives us "Airtight's Revenge" an incredible piece of artistry.

Bilal choose to go the indie route this time around and for an artist like him its the best way to go. This allowed the Philadelphia native to experiment in ways most artist can't. Producing nearly all 11 tracks on the album, Bilal was able to maintain the artistic integrity that made him the artist we fell in love with years ago. That in itself gave listeners exactly what they wanted from this album, Bilal's own thoughts, ideas, and concepts.

Love, relationships, politics, religion, and family are just a few of the places Bilal's mind takes us on his new album. "Airtight's Revenge" is a soulful record with traces of funk, jazz, and rock all mingled together to create the perfect blend. The album starts off with "Cake & Eat It Too" which is a retro funk tune that readies your ear for the album. "All Matter" is an uptempo track where Bilal shows the full range of his vocal arsenal while trying to explain what exactly love is. Another standout track and likely an emotional one for Bilal is "Little One" a song dedicated to his two sons that suffer from Sickle Cell and Autism. My current favorite is "Levels" a jazzy rhythmic tale that's dark and passionate. The album seems extremely personal for Bilal which makes it all the more intriguing. Every song takes my mind to a different place and when music does that its something special.

This record is like no other R&B album I have heard in the past. Needless to say Bilal wasn't afraid to let his creative spirit take the wheel and drive this album down a different path. Hopefully he won't make us wait another ten years for a follow-up.

Downstairs 8 yr Anniversary

Downstairs Apparel had their 8 year anniversary party. Although owner Jeff Strange and crew have only been in their current location for a couple years, they where celebrating from the start of their original location, ironically titled "Upstairs Apparel" which was located down the street from where they currently are on S.Lamar adn Oltorf. They had plenty of free drinks, great music from DJ Leilani, and even a bunch of giveaways including hats and accessories. Great times where had by all. Check out our shots after the break.

Just so you know, someone stole this cd from me like ten years ago and I am still upset about it to this day! Reggie Noble aka Redman dropped the classic album "Muddy Waters" in 1996 and its still a banger to this day. One of my favorite tracks from this record is "Pick it Up". Being a huge fan of old school hip hop, certain records give me a feeling I just cant explain. Bedford Stuyvesant's own "The Stuyvesants" have put together a musical masterpiece and I'm happy to say that feeling is back! In a collaborative effort, music producer Allan Cole (Algorythm) and record collector Darien Victor Birks (Flwrpt) have created some incredible instrumentals and hip hop heads are beginning to take notice.

This music takes me back to Pete Rock and early Kanye West days. Dope basslines, great sounds, unique soul samples, and a refreshing concept. The 25 track album pays homage to the 70's and all I can say is, WOW! Make sure you check out The Stuyvesants "Brooklyn's Finest" right away. Don't be surprised if these guys are the next big thing.

It was a struggle not to feature Yeezy's "Good Friday" record as the weekend jam so, I kept it in the family with Good Music artist Big Sean. The Detroit native recently released a dope mixtape entitled Finally Famous Vol 3. The mixtape features production by Kanye, No ID, and the host Don Cannon blessed a track as well. Drake, Bun B, Asher Roth, Curren$y, and Ye all spit notable verses but Big Sean clearly stands out. If you don't believe me, peep this standout track "What You Doin". Just might change your mind.

Californian architect Steven Hermann has built what he dubs his "opus". The Glass Pavillion. An extremely sleek, gorgeous post-modern five bedroom, five and a half bathroom house nestled on about 3 1/2 acres of land in the hills of Montecito, California. The house features a wine cellar, art gallery and a 5 car garage for his vintage car collection. And did i mention that all of the exterior walls are made out of glass?? Despite that Hermann says it gives him complete privacy and allows him to be "one with nature". It's listed for $35 mil via sotheby's International Realty if your curious on the price.

Fugees affiliate John Forte has been free for a while now and recording some pretty dope music. He recently did an acoustic set on the Soho House rooftop with impromptu guest Kanye West. The Foreign Exchange - Authenticity

I was so excited when I read this news there was no other option but to blog. The Foreign Exchange is on the eve of releasing their third studio album! The title of the new record is "Authenticity" and it will hit stores everywhere on 10/12. The title is suitable for a duo that has yet to be correctly categorized in a musical genre. They were unjustly, but fortunately placed in the R&B category in 2008 when nominated for a Grammy for Best Album. While I'm sure the group didn't mind, Phonte (who I like to call the poor man's Drake) and partner Nicolay make music that even they can't label. Nonetheless, "Authenticity" is about recognizing their unique trademark sound.

The album spans 11 tracks and features the likes of longtime collaborators Darien Brokington, YarZarah, and newschoolers such as Jeese Boykins III and Chantae Chan. If you are not familiar with The Foreign Exchange do yourself a favor and pick up their debut album "Connected" and the sophomore standout "Leave It All Behind". The new record is sure to be great and will likely feature a dope rap verse or two from Phontigga!!! Check out Nah Right for the new albums full tracklisting.

Austin Fashion Week has come and gone and we had a great time attending all the events and hosting our own. Thursday we participated in a show at the Capital front steps called "Texas A State of Fashion". Over 16 designers showed 3 looks a piece, with alot of great looks and models all around. Check us out! Who else you know has streetwear sharing the runway with couture AND looking good while doing it?? ..damn straight baby ;-)

Kixpo 2010

We've been pretty busy lately but we had to make time to check out Dallas's premiere sneaker expo, Kixpo. The drive was long and the weather was about 10 degrees shy of Hades but it was still a great time. Sponsors such as Vitamin Water, Taco Bell and Scion were on hand giving out samples and celebrating the culture with the crowd. Check out our pics after the break. Dior Homme Sneakers

Dior Homme has really been holding it down with the kicks as of late. Kris Van Assche has taken it from futuristic, to casual, and back to streetwear, and we (along with our wallets) have followed him every step of the way. His latest shoe takes on a skater look and I have to say, I dig it. The multi colored leather/suede shoe does exactly what it should, take a simple design but make it look extraordinary. This shoe is very versatile. Its for the regular cat who loves kicks but also the Kanye's of the world. Whatever category you fall in, they are now available at Colette.
